25年ほど前のこと。
70歳を過ぎたお爺と山で枝打ちをしていたことがある。
何町部もあるヒノキの山だった。深々とした森がどこまで続くのか見当もつかない。
いつ終わるんだかと、途方に暮れた。
お爺は何も言わず、淡々と、黙々と、木から木に移っていく。
私は彼に続くしかなかった。
そして、季節が変わった頃、その山を出た。
私たちがやろうとしていることは、そんな作業と似ているのかもしれない。
信じる道を、淡々と、黙々と。

About 25 years ago,
I was pruning branches in the
mountains with an old man in his seventies.
It was a vast forest of hinoki cypress, stretching
endlessly beyond sight.
I felt lost, wondering when the work would ever end.
The old man
said nothing, moving quietly and steadily from one tree to the next.
I had no choice but to
follow him.
And when the season changed, we finally left the mountain.
What we are trying to
do now may be something similar.
To walk the path we believe in, quietly, steadily.
