伝統も時間も継承するホテル
A Hotel That Inherits Both Tradition and Time
私事であるが、去年父が亡くなった。
This is a personal story, but my father passed away last year.
父は自宅にいることが好きな人で、家族を旅行に連れて行くような人ではなかったが、一度、私と兄が小学生の頃、和歌山の那智勝浦へ海水浴に連れて行ってくれた。
その時の宿が「サンかつうら」という名で、私にとって、生まれて初めてのホテルだった。古い過去の記憶が希薄な私にしては珍しく名前まで覚えているということは、それだけ昭和の小学生にとって、ホテルは非日常だったのかもしれない。
He was someone who loved staying at home and was not the type to take the family on trips. However, there was one time—when my older brother and I were in elementary school—when he took us to Nachikatsuura in Wakayama for a seaside vacation.
We stayed at a place called Sun Katsuura. It was the very first hotel I ever experienced.
For someone like me, whose memories of the distant past are usually faint, the fact that I still remember the name suggests how extraordinary a hotel felt to a child growing up in the Showa era.
万平ホテルはもともと、亀屋という中山道軽井沢宿の旅籠だった。明治に入り、世の変化に相応し、街道沿いの旅人の宿が、避暑地にたつ、西洋様式のホテルへと変化した。
万平ホテルの建物は木造である。全てではないが、柱や梁が木でできている。江戸と違って、令和は面倒な時代である。現存する百年を超える木造ホテルは少ない。
ただ、誤解を恐れずにいうと、私は万平ホテルに木造建築としての凄みは感じていない。
Manpei Hotel originally began as an inn called Kameya, a lodging for travelers along the Nakasendo highway in the Karuizawa post town.
With the changes of the Meiji era, it transformed from a roadside inn into a Western-style hotel in a summer resort town.
The buildings of Manpei Hotel are wooden structures. Not entirely, but many of the columns and beams are made of wood.
Unlike the Edo period, the Reiwa era is complicated. Wooden hotels that have survived for over a hundred years are extremely rare.
To be honest—without fear of misunderstanding—I do not feel the overwhelming technical power of wooden architecture in Manpei Hotel.
でも、
万平ホテルはいいホテルだ。
それは疑いようもない。
But still,
Manpei Hotel is a good hotel.
There is no doubt about that.
何がいいのか。
それは色だと思う。
So what makes it good?
I believe it is the colors.
柱や天井の色はもちろん、カーペットやテーブルクロス、参勤交代の様子が描かれたステンドグラス、窓の向こうの葉、そして、ホテルマンの顔色。
そんな色々が、木造の歴史を繋ごうとする意思によって、軽井沢の風土に調和している。
The colors of the columns and ceilings, the carpets and tablecloths, the stained glass depicting scenes of sankin-kōtai processions, the leaves visible through the windows—and even the complexion of the hotel staff.
All of these elements are harmonized with the climate of Karuizawa through a shared intention to carry forward the history of wooden architecture.
まさに、日本のクラシックホテルだ。
ただ古いだけではなく、今に通用する強さを持っている。
It is, without question, a Japanese classic hotel.
Not merely old, but possessing a strength that still resonates today.
父は退職後、母と毎年のように旅行に出掛けた。それは、体が動かなくなるまで、最後の最後までちゃんと続けていた。
After retiring, my father traveled almost every year with my mother. He continued to do so until his body could no longer keep up—right until the very end.
もしかしたら、一度や二度は、このホテルに泊まっていたのかもしれないと、サラサラ落ちるカラマツの葉を見ながら思った。
As I watched the larch leaves softly falling outside, I wondered whether they might have stayed at this hotel once or twice along the way.
